El Nadeem Centre invites all who are interested in combatting torture, individuals involved in Human Rights or media institutions to join in solidarity with Shady Maged Sa’ad Zaghloul and his wife. He was arrested and tortured in 6th October City Police Station two. After having made a complaint to the prosecutor’s office and showing his injuries and being examined by a forensic doctor he was further subjected to torture in the Police Station and was injured again. He was examined once more by the forensic doctor after the failure of the Police from carrying out the orders of the Prosecutor’s office. The Police Officers tried to pressure him in to withdrawing his complaint using different methods, the last of which was his and his wife and baby daughter’s abduction from in front of the prosecutor’s office. They were taken to the Police Station and detained for four days until Shady was forced to withdraw his complaint with the Prosecutor’s office.
Shady returned to the Prosecutor’s office to prove that his withdrawal occurred under pressure and this pushed the prosecution to try the three police officers Sherif Samir Ahmed Metwally, Hazem Beltagy Ibrahim and Ahmed Samir Sha’ban on the charge of the use of cruelty and detention without cause.
The first session of this trial is on Monday 7 December 2009 in 6 October City Misdemeanor Court.
UPDATE: The case has been adjourned until Dec 28 after Shady's lawyers requested that the civil claim be announced and the police station's log book be made available to them.

Al Nadeem Centre and the signatory organisations welcome the news of the judicial decision of 7 November 2009 from the Alexandria Criminal Court, which sentences Colonel Akram Ahmed Suleiman to five years imprisonment and awards temporary compensation of ten thousand and one Egyptian pounds, under the charge of the use of cruelty and causing permanent injury to Raga’i Mounir Sultan by using an implement (truncheon).
More than ten court rulings for release, yet Mohamed Abd El Rahim Mohamed Al Sharkawy remains detained
Tomorrow the 28 of October 2009 at 2:00PM Mr. Ziad Al Alimi and a number of activists from Al Nadeem centre will go to the office of the Public Prosecutor of Cairo to present an official complaint against the Minister of Interior and the Director of Agouza Police Station.
Mr. Mohamed Abd Al Rahim Mohamed Al Sharkawy has been detained for over 14 years, without being charged with or tried for any crime. The Ministry of Interior renews the decision for detention, as soon as every previous decision has been overturned by the courts, without giving a reason.
Al Sharkawy has petitioned the court for release during the course of his 14 year detention, the court grants his release, which leads to the Ministry of Interior objecting and the court rejects the objection. The Ministry of Interior then proceeds to make a new order of detention. Al Sharkawy has to go through the initial thirty day period once more where he is not allowed to make any legal claims.
The last judicial ruling for Al Sharkawy’s release was on the 7 of November 2008. The Ministry of Interior refused this decision. Nevertheless, the court of North Cairo decided on 15/12/2008 to support the decision of release. Mr Al Sharkawy however, remains in detention (El Wadi El Gedeed prison) after the Minister of Interior used his influence to stop the execution of the court decision.
The Prosecutor’s office of Damanhoor gave an order of arrest of Major Mohamed Roshdy yesterday Friday 30/10/2009 . He is the head of demolitions at the Damanhoor Police Centre, he is to be charged with the homicide of Mohamed Ramzy Ali Ibrahim Al Sharkawy a 62 year old farmer who lives in the village of Menia Atteya under the Damanhoor Police Centre of Beheira governorate. This is case number 7366 for the year 2009 of the Damanhoor Police Centre. It was also decided that the driver of the demolition truck should be detained for four days under investigation, after which he is to be charged with murder. Three employees of the local unit of the village of Desoonis Om Dinar will be charged with manslaughter and gross negligence. They are Rafik Salama an employee of the local unit, Mamdouh Taha the head of urban planning and Mohamed Madi head of the demolitions section.
The witnesses confirmed the incident when questioned by the Prosecutor’s office. The investigation started on Thursday evening and ended Friday morning. The investigation shows that Major Roshdy assaulted the victim because he was standing in front of the fence that was to be demolished. The victim could not take the beating so he fell unconscious in front of the fence. The major then gave the order to demolish the fence to the demolition truck driver saying, “ Tear it down on top of whoever is in front of it”. The driver followed the orders and the wall fell on the unconscious man and his blood flowed.
The truck driver tried to escape by running through the farms but was caught by the villagers. The major was able to flee after shooting his gun in the air and threatening the villagers.
